From 1967 to 1971 Jansport headquarters was on the second floor of Murray’s dads transmission shop where they hand made every aspect of each pack. JanSport ground breaking ingenuity continued into the early 1970’s with the invention of the first dome tent which they constructed out of aluminum arrow shafts, a major breakthrough in outdoor equipment. But this trio wasn’t done as their biggest break though was yet to come. In a conversation Skip had with a college store he found that students we using their packs to hold books. Shortly after the Book bag was born. With its size, leather bottom and nylon zipper, their new design took off and the rest is history.
Now the company is the world’s largest backpack manufacturer. JanSport is now a subsidiary of VF Outdoor and it is located in San Leandro, California.
